I can still remember my first trip to Presque Isle in the dead of winter and pulling in to my soon to be in-laws driveway and instead of the just the driveway being plowed, the snow had been pushed all the back, clearing the front lawn and side yard. As I stepped out of my vehicle, I grinned and asked what on earth was the plow driver thinking? That is when my soon to be husband introduced the term "plowing the dooryard". The plows drivers were always thinking and gearing up for the next big storm.
This winter I have a better appreciation for plowing the dooryard, as we have received 30" of snow this past week with another 8-12" predicted to fall this evening!
So for those of you from away who are thinking of moving North, when you approach a house, take note of the driveway vs. the plowed area. You may actually have more yard and less pavement than you think. And be careful what you plant in the springtime, strategically plant your garden, knowing darn well, that depending upon your plow driver, you just might have your dooryard plowed next winter!
